A memorandum was received from Division of Motor Carrier and Railroad Safety on
Safety Alert for Highway-Rail Crossing Warning Systems.
This advisory concerns the salting of railroad crossings with active warning devices
(flashing light signals with or without gates). Application of heavy salt or brine mixture
causes the active warning systems to fail. This failure results in the false activation of
the warning devices.
In order to prevent this false activation, please do not apply salt or brine solutions
across the tracks. Please stop short and restart the applications 20 feet to 25 feet from
the tracks.
