AASHTO Metrication Clearinghouse is On-Line

Federal legislation, an executive order, and a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) mandate require all state departments of transportation (DOTs) to convert their standards, specifications, publications, equipment, and software to metric (SI) units by September 30, 2000. These requirements, according to the Spring, 1996 issue of “Georgia Roads” (the newsletter of the Georgia Technology Transfer Center), are the reasons behind the creation of the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) Metrication Clearinghouse.

To help the DOTs in this significant undertaking, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program selected Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) as developer and coordinator of the AASHTO Metrication Clearinghouse. In addition to their more traditional availability in printed form, the Clearinghouse’s newsletters, lists of publications, and other valuable resources are now available on the Internet.

Type http://tti.tamu.edu/metric and metrically challenged users will access an Internet homepage informing them that “. . . the mission of the AASHTO Metrication Clearinghouse is to facilitate the adoption of the metric system by highway agencies and their suppliers by gathering, organizing, and sharing information in a timely, efficient, and cost-effective manner.”

The site is easy to navigate. From the homepage, menu choices include: newsletters, a searchable database of metric publications, key metric contacts, a tour of other metric sites (links), and Clearinghouse publications. The last choice incorporates publications on the metric conversion status of state highway agencies, geometric design standards, and the status of metric legislation.
